USVI elects new governor
On Tuesday night, Kenneth Mapp was elected to serve as the eighth elected governor of the US Virgin Islands.
Tuesday’s run-off election capped a three-month electoral process to select not only the next governor and lieutenant governor, but also the fifteen senators of the 31st Legislature and the next delegate to Congress.
Outgoing Governor John de Jongh wished all well as they prepare to assume the responsibilities of their respective offices.
“I congratulate Governor-elect Kenneth E. Mapp and Lieutenant Governor-elect Osbert Potter on tonight’s victory and assure them and the people of the Virgin Islands of my commitment to a smooth and successful transition as our new leaders prepare to take the helm of the government of the Virgin Islands. We are at a time when the Virgin Islands is confronted by a number of issues and challenges that we must all work together to build our future,” de Jongh said, adding, “I salute all voters who turned out at the polls today, the third go around for some, to exercise their precious right to vote to choose their leaders. This is democracy at work.”
Mapp ran as an independent, defeating the territory’s current Congressional delegate, Donna Christensen, in the run-off.
